This website has been created primarily in order to circulate the updated 2021 version of the art historian Isadora Rose-de Viejo’s catalogue reconstructing the former painting collection of Manuel Godoy, forty years after it was first presented in 1981 as part of her doctoral dissertation, Manuel Godoy Patrón de las Artes y Coleccionista (published by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 2 vols, 1983). This collection of over 1,000 works was formed in Madrid between 1792 and 1807, but totally dispersed shortly afterwards between 1808 and 1816. The revised catalogue (“Catálogo Actualizado”) of paintings in the collection as of 1 January 1808 has been uploaded, along with indices, relevant bibliography and documents.
Dr. Rose-de Viejo has published extensively since 1977 on Godoy and the fine arts, Francisco de Goya and other themes related to late-18th and early-19th century Spanish art, such as the Spanish Royal Wallpaper Factory. A pdf of her complete bibliography of published texts including books, exhibition catalogues, articles and reviews in specialized journals is also on this website. She has dedicated research to the graphic works of Rembrandt in Spain and their possible influence on Goya, to the less well-known painters Josef Perovani, Antonio Poza y Muñoz and Francisco de Paula Díaz y Carreño, as well as to references to jewelry in Giacomo Casanova’s memoirs. A recent text on books containing dedications to Manuel Godoy has also been included here in pdf format.
